Metaphor: Silver Bullets

Silver bullets kill the vampires.

The problem is not that there are no silver bullets. There are silver bullets—or if there aren’t any, you could make them fairly straightforwardly. The problems are

  1. Silver bullets are expensive, especially considering…
  2. There are no vampires.

In our business, the problems that we have involve regular people, and there’s a long history that shows that bullets of any kind, whether in guns or PowerPoint presentations, don’t address the underlying problems.

  1. I thought silver bullets killed werewolves. Staking or decapitation (or various combinations of) deal with vampires.

Wikipedia says, “Traditionally, the silver bullet is the only kind of bullet for firearms that is effective against a werewolf, vampire, witch, monster, or a person living a charmed life.”

Better yet, Wikipedia also says, “It should be noted that actual silver bullets are less dense than lead bullets. As a result they have less momentum after being fired from a gun and cause less damage. Because of this, silver bullets are in fact less effective than lead bullets.”

Many expended = just as many missed the target. My own favorite, “A methodology silver bullet invariably ends up wounding the person holding the smoking methodology gun.”
